Father of Echo Wang

Mr. Wang Jian, the father of a New Zealand student, was illegally sentenced in Jiangsu for his Falun Gong advocacy. We call for his release.

Current Status: Sentenced to 1.5 years on July 30, 2025; appealed the verdict.

Reason: For distributing USBs containing a film on the persecution of Falun Gong.

Reports of Torture: Yes; forced labor, brainwashing, sleep deprivation, and positional torture.

Current location: Taicang Detention Center, Jiangsu Province.

Family Background

Wang Jian: Born 1969, from Taicang, Jiangsu Province. Computer science graduate. Before his arrest in August 2024, he worked as a contractor on highways, bridges, and tunnels. Began practicing Falun Gong in March 1998, which improved his physical and mental health. He has been involved in activism such as distributing handwritten appeal letters since the persecution began.

Wife – Jenny Tao: From Jiangsu Province; currently resides in New York, USA. Formerly worked in quality control for a foreign-invested company in China. In December 1999, she was detained for 24 hours for mailing letters to spread awareness about the persecution of her faith.

Daughter – Echo: Born in Jiangsu Province; currently studying in New Zealand. Completed primary through high school in China, then went abroad to pursue higher education. Echo is actively advocating for the immediate release of her father.

People who have survived Chinese prisons attest to the enormous difference it can make to hear from the outside world directly. It lifts the spirits of those wrongfully detained, and shocks local officials, making them wary of participating further in persecution.
